Are you gluten-averse? If so, we can help. We’ve long supplied ingredients and foodstuffs to the gluten-free community. Initially, our customers tended to be those suffering from coeliac disease (about 1% of the population, according to Coeliac UK). In partnership with various UK pharmacies, we supplied food (and advice) to those needing specialist products.
Lots has changed in the ‘free from’ marketplace since we started up. There’s been an explosion of interest in gluten-free foods, with every major supermarket now sporting a ‘free from’ aisle. There’s been a marked increase in diagnoses of coeliac disease (fourfold, over the last ten years or so, it’s thought) and in ailments that cause similar digestive problems. And there’s been a distinct rise in those who are not diagnosed as coeliac, but who find that eating a gluten-free diet brings them numerous benefits.
A good description for the latter group is ‘gluten-averse’. These people want a clear indication of which foods contain gluten and they want some proper alternatives. They may or may not have a diagnosed medical issue – but they’re united in avoiding gluten wherever possible.
We help the gluten-averse
We’re pleased to be able to help the gluten-averse. We agree with those dietary experts who say that Western diets are generally too heavily dependent on commercially produced wheat. Toast for breakfast, sandwiches for lunch, pasta for tea, a couple of biscuits here and there during the day – wheat can end up being almost the only carbohydrate consumed!
And this needn’t be the case at all. There are so many wonderful alternatives to gluten-containing foods out there. There are amazing, naturally gluten-free flours that are staples in bread, porridge and baking all round the world and which can only add to the nutritional quality of our own diets. There are wholly natural products that are often contaminated with gluten, but which we have sourced in uncontaminated, guaranteed gluten-free form. And, of course, there are the readymade gluten-free alternatives, to make life that bit simpler.
