At Naturally Good Food we now stock barleygrass powder, as part of our ‘superfoods’ range. These ‘super’ products are those that are particularly nutrient-rich and that do an especially good job of keeping us healthy.
We’re really pleased to include barleygrass in this range. This powder is made from the young shoots of the barley plant. The shoots are cut at a vital point in their growth, when they’re bursting with minerals, vitamins and vitality. They’re quickly dried and crushed into a fine powder: typically, the process from harvest to finished powder takes less than one hour.
What does it taste like?
Like green, clean health itself! Barleygrass powder tastes a little like fresh green shoots of grass – but not overpoweringly so. It’s not usually eaten in isolation, but added to soups, stews, bakes, sauces, dips, dressings, smoothies or shakes, where it gives a nutritional boost and a pleasantly healthy taste.
Why should I try barleygrass powder?
Barleygrass is rich in a variety of minerals and vitamins. One of the most important of these is iron – a single serving of this powder provides around one-third of your recommended daily iron requirement. If you’re short on iron (and you may be, if you’re regularly fatigued), then this is a great supplement to take. Iron is needed for red blood cell formation and to transport oxygen round the body.
Barleygrass also contains fibre, calcium, magnesium and zinc. Fibre keeps our digestive system moving properly and contributes to good bowel health. Calcium builds our bones and keeps them strong; it also helps our blood clot, our muscles contract and our nerves send messages. For good muscle and nerve function, as well as for stable blood sugar and blood pressure, and sound memory function, we need magnesium, while zinc is renowned for its benefits for immunity, reproductive health, growth and repair.
There’s a healthy supply of vitamin E in barleygrass too, as well as a wealth of antioxidants. Vitamin E maintains healthy skin and eyes, fights infection and strengthens our immune systems. Antioxidants, meanwhile, get to work on ‘free radicals’ – oxidised molecules that can damage our bodies.
A really good supplement
We find barleygrass a really good supplement to recommend. It’s not one of the more ‘weird and wonderful’ superfoods we stock (though we’re obviously very proud of those too!), but something that’s reasonably familiar, in both name and taste. It’s a fantastic provider of tip-top nutrition – just the thing to invigorate in these cold winter months!
