Clearspring is one of Naturally Good Food’s leading brands – we’ve got a wide selection of their 260 (and counting!) products dotted all over our shelves. It’s popular with those looking for the finest organic and traditionally made products and is also a firm favourite with vegans and vegetarians. With the recent trend towards eating fermented food, we’re seeing more and more customers searching for our Clearspring products.

This brand appeals to people on macrobiotic diets, as well as those wishing to avoid refined sugar. It’s great for customers who are searching for hard-to-find authentic products – and, quite simply, is perfect for everyone who wants to eat the very best, pure, health-giving food. With an ethos as clear and sparkling as a mountain spring, Clearspring has been leading the way for over 25 years!

Clearspring is a family-owned brand, founded by Christopher Dawkins. For 18 years Christopher lived in Japan, where he became an expert on Japanese ingredients (especially miso). Back in the UK, the Clearspring range expanded to include organic, plant-based European products too. Everything in the range is organic and 100% vegan. There are no genetically modified ingredients, no artificial additives and no refined sugar of any kind. The focus is on ingredients produced by traditional methods, with an emphasis on their ultimate health benefits.

As the family put it:

‘…everyone should have access to quality organic food to eat well. Our products make a valuable contribution to sustainable agriculture, by supporting organic farmers and artisan food producers. Through enriching the soil and caring for the eco-system, we are protecting the world that we pass on to our children.’

It all started with miso

At the very source of the brand’s ‘spring’ is miso. That’s where it all began – and to this day, Clearspring stock only the finest Japanese miso, made as slowly and authentically as possible. This process gives a rich and complex flavour and the very best health benefits.

At Naturally Good Food we’ve got a range of Clearspring misos, including miso pastes and instant miso soups. This fermented Japanese food is made by cooking soya beans and then combining them with handmade koji (grains or beans inoculated with Aspergillus oryzae mould spores), salt and water. The mixture is fermented over several months in cedarwood kegs. The koji is full of digestive enzymes, which, along with naturally occurring yeasts and bacteria, break down the beans and grains into readily digestible amino acids, fatty acids and simple sugars. Miso is taken daily in Japan, to strengthen the digestive system and ward off digestive problems. Many other health benefits are ascribed to it – see Clearspring’s blog here, for the full story. (This handily also tells you just how to use each particular type of miso.)
