You old smoothie, you – but how much sugar?

We love a good smoothie at Naturally Good Food. We make quite a lot of them between us, swapping recipes and techniques, and we sell a lot of food that’s destined to make its way into smoothies. But we do want to make sure that what we’re drinking – and of course, selling – isn’t doing us more harm than good, particularly as awareness of the sugar content of our daily drinks increases. So we’ve put our rubber gloves on and delved a little deeper into the mysteries of the smoothie….

How much sugar does your smoothie contain?

It’s been claimed that some smoothies contain more sugar than a can of coke. Research shows that the machines we use to blend our drinks can strip out all the fibrous bits of the fruity stuff, simply releasing the sugar and serving it up to us in huge quantities (and that’s before any sweeteners are added).

We’re not arguing against these findings – though we don’t want anyone to throw out the baby along with the bathwater. We know that most smoothies are packed full of good stuff and are a great way to get a load of fruit and vegetables into our diets. But the fruit found in them shouldn’t account for more than one or two helpings of our ‘five a day’. Taking in too much sugar, in a smoothie or otherwise, isn’t good for our teeth or our overall health.

However, the smoothie surveys that produce the most alarmist headlines only consider processed, manufactured drinks – which we don’t sell at Naturally Good Food. They don’t deal with homemade smoothies, or with those that mostly contain vegetables.

The smoothies we’re really keen on at Naturally Good Food are the ones that mix and match fruit with vegetables, and with other nutritious ingredients, like nuts and seeds. So forget the super-sweet smoothies! We sell just what you need to make your own super-healthy drinks instead. Include plenty of vegetables alongside your fruit – and obviously, leave out the added sugar.

Make your own super-smoothies

You’ll no doubt have your own favourite smoothie recipes. A great way to boost their nutritional charge is to add some extra, superfood ingredients to the mix. How about:

  • Milled chia and flax seeds: these plump up, absorbing liquid and giving smoothness, as well as a boost of protein and other elements.
  • Non-dairy milks: unsweetened almond milks, hemp milk, rice milk or coconut milk, among others, are great suppliers of vitamins and minerals.
  • Coconut water: this is a refreshing addition to a lighter drink.
  • Coconut oil (butter): for a really smooth smoothie, with a wealth of good fats, use this oil. It can replace the sweetened yoghurt or ice-cream sometimes called for in recipes.
  • Superfood powders: we’ve got an amazing range of unsweetened superfood powders, all extensively used in our customers’ smoothies. Try lucuma for a caramel taste, for instance; maca powder for energy; or spirulina for a proper dose of iron. If you’ve always fancied including more ‘super’ and unusual foods in your diet, but haven’t been quite sure how to do so, then simply stick them in a smoothie. It’s a great way to experiment with things like goji berries or baobab fruit pulp powder, among others.
  • Nut butters: for protein, vitamins and minerals, in a smooth form, a nut butter is a great ingredient.
  • Avocado: an avocado brings a smooth texture, much as a banana does, but without the sugar content.
  • Spices: organic ginger, nutmeg and cinnamon add a new dimension to your drink – and can take the place of a sweetener.

Fruity, rich and very desirable: we still can’t help falling for a good old smoothie!
